Feliz Dias

Our first weekend in Guatemala was great. We had the "slumber party" Friday night... Saturday, we actually got to sleep in! Wooohooooo!!! I'd forgotten how much I love to sleep. So far we've been woken up every day by birds chirping/squawking outside our window. It was great at first...happy birds, sunshine...you know. Now, well, it can be rather annoying at 6 on a Saturday! We went to the school for a few hours on Saturday. Katie and I finished making some books for their classes. We are pros now. =)

Saturday night, we chilled at the casa. We actually got in bed at a decent hour and everything. I'm really loving these relaxing days. This morning, we went to our first church service. It was great! I think I feel in love with Guatemalans a little bit more. The music is great...I'll have to sneak some video to post. They had a whole trumpet section. They were the loudest, happiest trumpets I've ever heard. Katie and I are really surprising ourselves with our Spanish knowledge. We aren't fluent, mind you, but we are way better than we thought we were. We actually were able to understand the gist of the sermon and picked up several new words.

We kind of freak out when people talk to us in fast Spanish though. I guess it's too much pressure and we freeze up or something. They will be using words we know and we still just freeze and stare. haha. Today, after church, one of the ushers came up to Katie and shook her hand while talking and Spanish. Well, she panicked and just said "si" and nodded. The guy just looked at us a little funny and asked Sis. L if we understood and she said "um no, it doesn't look like it". He had said "I want to bless you in the make of Jesus Christ". We know alllllll of those words but sheesh...too much pressure. We haven't had any real awkward instances yet though. One time Katie told a girl her favorite color was "verdad" (truth) instead of "verde" (green). Katie and I come home every day cracking up. We will eventually get the hang of this whole speak Spanish 24/7 thing, I'm sure. Sis. L is giving us until we get back from Spanish school...after that...it's all Spanish.

We had our first restaurant experience today too. We went to a little preppy panaderia that is kind of like Panera Bread. We got to sit out in the sun and eat yummy sandwiches and soup. Oh and they were playing country music. No one speaks English but they love the music.....love it! We stopped and got ice cream on the way home. I got Pina (pineapple) and Katie got Fresa (strawberry). All three of our ice creams were 10Q which is a little over $1!! How awesome is that? Mi gusta Guatemala muchisimo!!!
Me and the Awesome Sis. L
Oh yeah..we love pan (bread)
Doesn't it look muy delicioso?
Our kind of living....=)
